Four Imperatives: Think|Build|Live|Give

Yesterday I turned 42 and spent most of day thinking, writing, and rearranging portions of my life. One of the exercises I do from time to time is a mind map that has my name in the center, and then from there I attempt to define who I am, what my deepest purpose is, and how the various pieces and parts of my life support each other. While doing this exercise yesterday I kept coming back to the same four concepts; thinking, building, living and giving. The more I thought about them the more I found myself feeling very comfortable with these four words forming a framework for my life. Four areas of activity if you will that all humans have the ability to contribute to. Being my birthday and all, I decided that starting the next day I would begin being deliberate about fulfilling my deepest purpose within these four areas.

Think: in order to thrive as a race, we have always relied on the great thinkers to get us by. I would suggest to you that we must all become great thinkers. This section of the blog will explore how to think. How to achieve extremely high levels of cognitive performance, and will pay close attention to the rapidly changing theories of how we learn, how we remember, and why we think the way we do.

Build: we are by our very nature creative beings. The intention of this section of the blog will be to share my thoughts and current research on the nature of building successful businesses, successful organizations, and other things that can be built. It is not a home improvement blog, but an example or two from that realm might slip in.

Live: in my younger years I played every sport, participated in every league, and generally was a year round athlete. But as time moved on I fell into the pattern of work, work, work…and more work. Recently, I have woken up and decided that life is to be lived, experienced, and conquered one adventure at a time. In this section I will share with you some of the key concepts that I’ve uncovered as it relates to truly living life and pursuing great adventures.

Finally, the Give section of the site will be devoted to the art of giving. Sure, you could throw money at a cause and pretend that that is good enough. But it isn’t. At least not for me…I need to give of my time and energy and by doing so give something that is far more valuable than money.  Isn’t that the true essence of a gift? We’ll explore that topic in detail and discuss what happens to you internally when you decide to give back and live beyond yourself.

By the way, thanks to David Deida for introducing me to the concept of ‘deepest purpose’. Its a profound way of thinking about your reason for existence.

So, please enjoy the posts as I begin the journey and feel free to let me know what journeys you might be on. It is my hope that a few people will wander by and we’ll have some good discussions and in the end all learn a little more about ourselves.

Ken
